Restaurant reviews for The Fairview

Review submitted on August 17th, 2010 by Mack – from Marshfield/quincy

Overpriced

I like the idea of the Fairview. The restaurant looks great and the view is more than fair. Sadly the food is, at best, fair. The prices, however, are way out of line. Entrees of equal or better quality are available at other Marshfield Restaurants for a fraction of the Fairview's prices.

Great view, bad food.

Went to the Fairview for lunch on recommendation of a local businessman.
Served three bad meals, admittedly two were the same meal, Rueben sandwiches.
Uncooked bacon in the BLT and though hand cut, White Bread, too lean beef and skimpy Russian dressing made for very dry, not very tasty Rubens. DON'T GO,
view does not makeup for the bad food.

Best Lunch

Went for lunch with my wife. Enjoyed the best bloody mary on the south shore! Ordered the chicken ceasar salad pizza and tempura shrimp to share for lunch. Both were outstanding, as was the outdoor seating. Followed the bloody with a black and tan that was poured perfectly. Easily the best lunch in the region.
WILL go back.

Pretty good meal and service

had dinner on their deck last Friday evening. Service was very professional and prompt. Steamers were sweet and non sandy. Chicken Gemelli was very tasty but a bit overpriced at $15.95. Steak sandwich was tender and cooked perfectly. First time there.. interior was handsomely done. Reminded me of a Joe's American Bar.
Need better lighting on deck for menu reading..

Absolutely Terrible

This was probably the worst dining experience my husband and I have ever had. Our food took FOREVER - and when it finally arrived, it was so unappetizing that we barely ate. We should have known from the second our waitress came over that it would be a bad night when we noticed how dirty her fingernails were. Even though we almost lost our appetite right there, we regretfully stuck it out. However, what offended us the most was when we overheard the owner's wife tell acquaintances of ours at a nearby table that she doesn't need townies in her restaurant. If she has no need for townies, then we and our friends will make sure never to step into that restaurant again.

Fairview

Went to Halfway Cafe Friday 3/28/08. Too long a wait. Decided to go to Fairview Inn. Bad choice. Poor service. (I wished I had waited at Halfway)
Food was served cold. Too pricey. Will not go back

dissappointed

I have struggled whether to write this review and have decided for the benefit of the restaurant as well as the patrons it needs to be said. I specifically went to the Fairview the night before my wife's birthday to reserve a table by the fireplace for the following evening. I met with the manager who indicated the number of the table and stated that we could have it for the following evening at 7:00PM. Being next to the fire was a priority for me as it was her birthday and a cold dreary February evening, and I explained the nature of the event to the manager. While I was there with a friend we also partook in two cocktails at the bar. I was happy to give the bar my service given the night I was anticipating the following evening and the extra attention the manager had given me.

When we arrived the following evening at approximately 6:55PM, both tables by the fire were taken. Fine. I figured that someone else had gone over (timewise) from a previous sitting and we would wait in the bar until at least one of the two tables by the fire became open. I explained to the hostess that we had reservations for the table by the fire and that as indicated in the book it was a special occassion. She offered another table, and I explained that I would prefer to wait in the bar for one of the tables I had requested and reserved the evening before. We waited for over one hour. We had two glasses of wine between us, and we were patient. No one ever came to us to at least acknowledge the mix up. Finally we went to the front of the restaraunt and sat on the bench to the right of the hostess station. Again, no one came to apologize, to offer to "comp" our drinks, or to simply acknowledge us. In fact we were ignored in a rather obvious manner. We stood out being the only two people sitting alone on the bench. At the least I figured the management or hostess could have perhaps oferred to comp the people at the table we had reserved an after dinner drink or something to move them along and free up one of the two tables by the fire. After one and a half hours, having still not once been approached by the manager or hostess since we arrived, we left.

We did manage to get a decent dinner at the lobster tale nearby. It wasn't what we had planned for her birthday, but at least we were no longer hungry and we were acknowledged and received good service.

Overall I have liked the Fairview. This night however something clearly went awry. One and a half hours is a long time to wait though when you took the extraordinary step to reserve a table in person and to alert the management and staff that it is a special day. Given the preparation that went into the evening on my part and the premium that the Fairview gets for its superb view and decor, it would have gone a long way to have someone acknowledge us and make some accomodation for their mistake.

outsiders unwelcome

I used to be a regular at 'the old Fairview' and the restaurant was always terrific. There was a welcoming feel to the place and I enjoyed some great memories there. Since the place has re-opened under new ownership, I have noticed the food preparation has been inconsistent. But, my major disappointment has been the consistent rudeness and 'sketchy' service. The place looks great but I have had too many unfortunate evenings. The owners clearly take care of their "friends" to the detriment of the other diners. I was a first-hand victim of being slighted by the hostess so that she could take care of "her people". I won't be back. It's a real shame this place isn't run better and more equitably. I have lived in Marshfield a long time. Thankfully, the community is attracting some better restaurant choices. The town is starting to look up...

A fairview regular

I go to the fairview a lot. I often see many regulars there which shows they do a great job. I have never had a bad meal! Service has always been great whether I'm sitting at the bar or in the dining room. Stongly encourage everyone to try it!

5 strikes your out

My family decided yhat on fathers day they would take me to dinner. When we got there the place was not even that busy. We sat down and waited 20 minutes before anyone came to the table. We ordered drinks and then ordered apps which were alright but after we waited 35 minutes before he cleared them and then he came over to tell my wife that they had just run out of the striped bass special. She ordered the Tuna at $27.00 (the special was $21.00. She ordered the tuna vey rare and when it came out after only 5 minutes it was well done and dry....We are people that have been in the restaurant business and understand thigs happen. After 20 more minutes it came out cooked correctly, mine was okay not very impressed, but what really gets me was that I was in the main dinning room facing the hostess stand watching the owner and the hostesses and not one person came over to apolagize or even charge her the same price as the striped bass. Just the lack of caring has gotten me to write this and to say to the owners I will never ever recomend or ever again spend one penny in your restaurant again. And by the way the couple next to us were having a worse experience than us, but that is there story...

Rude hostess

Our evening at the Fairview Restaurant was expensive and the food was lackluster. We can tolerate the occasional disappointment. However, the evening was made more frustarting by the rude hostess who did not care to have us be heard. This older woman's attitude reeked of... "If you don't like it, then dine elsewhere". Good point.

Not Good

Went to Fairview last evening. Very mediocre. Very over-priced in relation to the quality of the food. I was thinking of having a wedding rehearsal dinner party here, but now I know better. I remember well the old Fairview and really really miss it. This place just doesn't get it.

Please hire and TRAIN better wait staff

The Fairview was our favorite place for several years. We had never had a bad meal there, winter or summer. Our last two visits were a disaster of poor service. At one dinner with 8 of us present, the waitress stacked the dishes in front of one of the party after the meal, splatting food about as she did this. When serving the plates she handed them out at on end of the table and said "Pass them down!" She was surly as well. The next visit, the server listened in on our conversation and commented on our topic. Note: she was not serving us at the time! I miss the Fairview and now that the good weather is due, I will miss a bottle of white wine and a pizza on the porch!

good drink - lousy food

The nice weather had me hankering for seafood and a good drink. The drink was decent but my seafood was not good at all. I hope this place improves because the location is good. It's not cheap either - too much money.

Bloodymaries are the best

i went to the Fairview Sunday and our service was great. Bar side was busy but the waiter made us feel welcome and was very attentive to our needs. We ordered bloobmaries and they were simply perfect with a gigantic shrimp cocktail in them. The chowder I had really hit the spot. My husband's french onion soup was perfect. We actually left another restaurant because they changed to a premade bloody mary mix! I'am so glad we did.

I long for the "old" Fairview...

The Fairview used to be our comfy, cozy neighborhood restaurant. It had great food, good drinks and a relaxed atmosphere...all at a reasonable price. The staff was low key and chatted it up with the patrons. On stormy nights, we would walk up there for "storm parties" and get warm by the fire with our neighbors.

The "new' Fairview is stuffy. It is trying to be too fancy. The food is not nearly as good and it is overpriced.
I would love to tell the new owners that the people of Brant Rock would prefer a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere with good pub grub and basic seafood than what they offer. I have been there a handful of times since they opened, and have been dissapointed every time.

Over rated !!!

My husband and I decided to try the Fairview after not being there for a few years. It will probably be at least a few years before we try it again. Food is very over priced for what you get. We ate in the bar and the waitress/bartender was very cordial and polite, but our appetizer was very slow in arriving, then was quickly followed by our meals so we never had time to eat the appetizer, which was greasy onion strings anyway. We really wanted seafood, but there was not many seafood choices on the menu and what was there was overpriced. (Fish and chips for $18.) The meals we had were not bad, just not a good value for what we paid. All in all a BIG dissapointment. Won't be back in a hurry.

I have given up...

I have eaten at The Fairview three times in recent months. All three were major strikes. The major problem on my first visit was poor service. I had made a reservation but still had to wait about 30 minutes before I was seated at a poor table. I then felt very much overlooked by the waitress. Eventually, food arrived at my table but it was the wrong dish. The waitress actually insisted I was the one making the error and not her! I felt so insulted when she told me I had ordered the food on my plate when I clearly had not. Despite this incident, I tried it again. This time it was not so bad. Service was still rathr slow but nothing too extreme. The main problem was my food. It was very, very dry and lacked any real flavor... especially for what it cost me. Finally, I was ready to give it one final shot - maybe that makes me a sucker. Once again, my reservation was not ready and I had to wait. My dinner was satisfactory this time but I had the same slow service. Most upsetting was dessert. It came out and it was still partially frozen. Apparently it had just come out of the freezer recently. When I pointed this out, they took the dessert away but never offered to replace it... thus, I had no dessert that night. It is truly disappointing because I remember how nice the old Fairview was. It is a tragedy that the only things I have found to be consistent with this one are poor service, poor food, and poor value since they charge so much for food that is never better than mediocre.

the good and bad

Pros:
-Pretty good burgers- sit in the pub area and don't expect too much
-Nice hot bread - right out of the oven
-Nice ocean view from the dining room in the daytime
-Like winter ambienence - the fireplace and christmas decorations

Cons:
-Nothing (execpt the burgers) is really great. I go there because I don't feel like cooking, not because I crave anything.

-Went to sit out at the patio on a summer afternoon for cocktails around 3:00- there was maybe 2 other parties on the patio. We sat down and were told we could only sit there if we were going to order food. Let me get this straight, we were 4 adults who were going to oder approximately 12 cocktails at $6-$8 a piece in 1 hour. You'd rather have someone ordering a $12 salad, then somone spending over $25 in cocktails? We had to promise to leave if it got busy...comical.

Not such a nice dinner on Valentine's day...

We went to the Fairview on Valentine's day. We arrived at 8pm for our reservation. It was a stormy night so, when I saw the restaurant pretty empty , I figured that was why. I'm not sure why but, we were not seated in the dining room even though it was empty. We were seated in the noisy bar area with a few noisy Nextel's going off on the patron's at the bar etc.
The wait staff was not friendly, seemed somber actually.
Our waitress forced a smile and took our order.
We waited a long time for the food and when it arrived it was just warm. My husband's steak was not far from raw. He never sends anything back but, this was going to have to be an exception. When his steak finally came back, it was chewy and way over done. I ordered the chicken, it was just ok, nothing memorable. The price was a lot for meals that were fair at best.
I was dissapointed and would not return, not even in the summer for the view.

Enjoyable

My husband and I went to the Fairview twice for special occasions-once my birthday and second time for our anniversary. Both times we had a wonderful dinner. The atmosphere was quite, cozy and only a few other customers. We were greeted immedately at the door with a smile. The waitress was pleasant and attentive. I will say there was a little too much BBQ sauce on my steak tips but they were nice and hot.

As elementary as the ABC's

Absolutely Bad Cuisine...
And, throw in a D for good measure... Our evening was Dreadful.
We tried to air our displeasure with the hostess and she just wasn't interested. Never again.

Unimpressed

I thought I was smart to take my valentine here before the stormy weather arrived. So it wasn't the official day but I figured I would get to this place on a quieter night without the crowds. I figured the location would be great and the mood would be perfect. If only our meals came to the table when they were supposed to arrive. Our plates were both 'just warm' and they seemed like they had been sitting out for awhile. No surprise here. The entrees arrived just after our salads. I did have the meals go back as I thought we were being rushed. But, they must have just put them down some place without taking care to keep them hot. The experience was not very good at all. We decided to go somewhere else later for a drink. Thankfully, I was able to make up for this on Valentine's day but we settled for takeout. It's just as well since the weather was so bad. Maybe I will try The Fairview again when the summer arrives. I just hope the place can get its act together by then. It was not very good at all considering the expense. But, it's a drive for us and there are so many good places to try now like that place that took over Bert's in Plymouth...right on the water.

Bummer!

I recently had a wedding rehearsal dinner party at the Fairview. This dinner was planned well in advance with a "special menu". I even had picked out a room, e.g which part of the dining room do I want my guests seated at. When we arrived we were hustled into the bar. We had a long table, most guests were seated up against the wall. Talk was difficult as we were competing the sports program on the television. Had choice of steak or fish. Steak was poor quality, fish was dry. I paid a hefty price per person for this "special menu". I was denied the dessert I had picked out. My guests were to have a choice of 3 desserts. Everybody was told that cheesecake was the only dessert offering. Several of my guests did not eat cheesecake. When the father of the groom requested a piece of chocolate cake that he would gladly pay for, he was given a slice of partially frozen chocolate cake. Several of our guests were from out of state. This dinner was an emabarrassment. I opted to not make a scene. I wrote to the owners and they never responded to my letter.

One of the best!

One of our favorite restaurants. The bread is excellent, the views are amazing, and the food is great! Try their specials, often times there is a great meal on there that you'll regret not having if you don't order it. I had a salmon stuffed with shrimp and brie cheese which was awesome.

I proposed to my fiancee on the beach across the way after a dinner here!

early New Year's dinner

Now ordinarily i would cut a restaurant a little slack on New Year's Eve especially if you dine at 9PM or later. They are under a lot of pressure. However, we went to eat at the Fairview at 5:15 and this is their business for goodness sake, its what they do!. we were seated immediately upon arrival, approx 5:20. we ordered drinks and one appetizer less than 5 minutes later. when the appetizer came, we ordered the entrees. 10 minutes later the entrees were delivered! we hadn't even gotten through 1/2 the appetizer. my food was barely lukewarm, in fact, the au gratin potatoes were cold. now i did something i do not normally do, i sent the food back, with just one request, please heat up the potatoes. well, i got everything back at the same temperature as before. i swear they gave me a new piece of prime rib and tranferred my potatoes to a new dish and carted it all back to me. to make along story short, we were home at 6PM! so much for a leisurely New Year's dinner. We wont be going back. we got the message, "eat and get out!"

Bring Back the Old Fairview

Whatever happened to the old Fairview? I have lived in this town for well over 20 yrs. I still remeber with fondness the old Fairview; a local favorite always. I have visited this restaurant 2-3 times past year. I have not been pleased but I kept going backing thinking that my bad experience was just an off night. Well, the restaurant is not good. Inconsistent with quality of food, service. Fairview should get it's act together. A lot of nice, better restaurants are popping up in Marshfield like "Ember" which is fabulous and "Aoyama" which is also fabulous.

What happened?????

I used to love the Fairview. On a rainy night it would seem to be a perfect night in front of the Fireplace. Not anymore. Place needs a "timeout". Maybe by summer they can get their act together.

Good food shame about the service

I've been to the Fairview throughout the years and the food is usually of a good standard but it seems that although the new owners did a great job rebuilding the place they have allowed the service to decline.
On my most recent visit (and this is not an isolated experience) the waitress made too few visits to our table to collect orders and refresh drinks and despite our obvious displeasure the owners wife seemed content to remain at the end of the bar ensuring that her glass was filled rather than pay any attention to her customer's obvious frustration and annoyance.
That being said the food was very good (when it did finally arrive) and I can recommend the Salmon and Chowder. The jambalaya is a favorite too.
My hope is that there will be a return to the old standards because the Fairview has so much potential and I'd rather patronize the place than boycott.

A preteder in Marshfield dining circles.

I have been to the Fairview several times and my most recent visit will be my last. The service was poor and the food was underwhelming....and, my plate was just warm like it had been sitting awhile. It was a pleasant evening weather-wise and I had hoped for a more impressive visit. The location is spectacular but the atmosphere is wasted with the meal experience. I wish this place would make some wholesale changes. The Fairview should be a major town landmark. It could be a major contender in south shore dining but it continues to be a pretender. For a seacoast town, Marshfield could do so much better. Let's hope the future will be brighter. I'm tired of driving out of town for superior dining experiences.

we visited the Fairview with company from out of state , the food was very good , we all had different things and shared , jambalaya , picatta chicken , margaritta pizza it was wonderful, the best part of our evening was the waitress, she had waited on us at another establishment in town for many years.and know one wud tell us where she was when we asked for her , we were delighted to have found her and we will be back. Fairview you are lucky to have such a delightful person, A total wonderful evenining, was great to see Betty & Paul too, as well as Lauren as hostess (don't know where Lindsey went off to) Our children went to school with the girls. Again thank you and see you soon

Our favorite place

We have had mostly positive experience. Good is generally and sometimes great. Atmosphere is very pleasant. Wait staff sometimes inexperience, but never rude. Great wine list for a mid priced restaurant. It is usually our restaurant of choice.

Best Place Around

I visit the Fairview quite often. The food is generally very good and most of the staff is quite attentive. I love the ambiance in the lounge, especially in the winter. I really enjoy the crabcakes and salads along with the Chicken Picata. The management is very personable, with one young lady who is especially friendly and professional. In the town of Marshfield or its surrounds you are hard pressed to get a better dining experienc.

So So

Because I love the location and ambiance, I keep giving the Fairview chance after chance. The food is decent; I would like to see more pasta dishes on the menu. The chicken picata pasta dish is a very poor excuse for an Italian entree. But more disappointing than the food is the service. The wait staff, though usually not very busy, seem to forget that you are there. Slow, slow, slow service!!! I may eventually give up on the Fairview.

Used to be good

Honestly, the food isn't bad. Our meals are usually good. We would rather sit at the bar than the dining room and have a wonderful bloody mary. However, the past few visits have not been as memorable. The staff is miserable. Most recently, I was looking around for the bartender and two waitress' and the owner were gossiping at the end of the bar. They all made eye contact and didn't ask me if I needed help. We ordered a meal and returned it because I didn't like it. The chef came out to explain that this is how it would be cooked for now on. She too was rude, plus I didn't need an explination from her. I hope Betty hires new staff because shes not getting any above and beyond with the staff they have now.

Won't be back

Went the other night and it was a poor time. The apps were good and wine was good. The entrees took a very very long time to come out and it wasn't worth the wait. The fried fish and chips were not cooked all the way through and the picatta came with mashed when I wanted it over pasta.
The chef, or who appeard to be came out of the kitchen and barked at a server in front of the dining room. Not professional at all. The manager was less than professional also by talking about how slow one of the servers were.
Overall, food ok and professionalism awful.

Not Worth It

My wife and I went there for a nice dinner. Well we looked at the menu and have to tell you it sounded like the same old same around town. Chowder stunk, broken cream and no flavor. Seems everyone was at the bar drinking bud and watching the game. My wife had the iceburg salad, what do you say about that..... She had a simple burger rare came out medium. Waitress was nice and that was about it. This time here put the nail in the coffin for us just can't go there again. Bland same as everywhere in town. Why, why, why the place feels nice and cozy people are nice but can't take it anymore

Our table of three - not one of us had a decent meal and this place wasn't cheap. And, we discovered it's a waste of time to offer constructive criticism. The staff wasn't listening. A total waste of time and money. And rudeness? You would think the old Durgin Park experience was tame compared to this disaster.

My sister was told to take her fish home to cook it!

We just finished dining at the Fairview Inn. The waitress brought our food, came back to the table within 2 minutes to ask us how our food was. At that point it was fine. My sister was enjoying her veggies and hadn't stuck a knife in her stuffed salmon yet. Once she did, she realized that her fish was raw. When the waitress finally returned to our table we pointed it out to her, she offered to take it back to the kitchen and have it cooked. My brother and I had, by this time, finished our meals and were ready to leave. The waitress then suggested that she take it home and cook it there. The bill was brought to us without an acknowledgement or hint of not charging us for the uncooked meal. I am VERY disappointed in the Fairview. We will not be hurrying back to have a disinterested waitress suggest that we take our food home to have it properly cooked!

We dined, we ate, we did not complain. The company we were with was all the
entertainment we needed. Things just happened, so we didn't notice until the
bill arrived! We drank, we ate, we had dessert. In other words we spent money!
WHY DO HAVE TO CHARGE FOR A REFII OF COFFEE??? That was terrible. We are in
the food industry also, and we know that the biggest money maker is coffee!
The first cop you have already paid for the whole pot of coffee, why to have
to pay for the next whole pot of coffee. Bad for word of mouth!

Nice atmosphere, poor service

My husband and I have been to the Fairview twice. I really want to love this restaurant, but something is not right, and it is the service. The food has been very good both times (although could use some more creative entrees on the menu) The first time we went was our 1rst anniversary which we told the restaurant ahead of time, and our waitress got my order wrong and asked if I wanted it anyways, and then ignored us for the rest of the evening. (we were not looking for special treatment just a warm and comfortable experience) The second time we went we had the 'busboy' waiting on us due to inadequete staffing and although he was at least friendly, we felt we spent more time waiting on ourselves. I really wish they would spend some time hiring and training knowledgable, friendly, and attentive waitstaff, and I will keep going back!

Consider some staffing changes

I have been to the Fairview on several occasions and find the food to be excellent each time. However, the staff is always a constant let down. Without fail each time we are seated it takes around ten minutes for the waiter/waitress to make their way to our table. They are far from friendly and it seems the fact that they are working for tips escapes them.

Best restaurant in Brant Rock

I have sampled a fair number of restaurants in Marshfield, including all of the places in Brant Rock. The Fairview really sticks out as having by far the best food. I don't know what people are looking for, but the Fairview has exactly what I'm looking for -- outstanding seafood dishes. I never fail to be disappointed with their fish, and they vary the menu frequently enough that I've never ordered the same thing twice. The stuffed salmon I had one time was particularly good.

My impression is that most of the other restaurants in town are very much overpriced, with the exception of Bluewater. While the Fairview has the highest prices in Brant Rock, the food is head and shoulder above the rest, and compares quite favorably with any restaurant I have been to in Boston and Cambridge. We've only been dining at the Fairview over the last 9 months since we moved to Marshfield, and we've never been on a busy night, but there's no question where we're going when we go out, to the Fairview or occasionally to Bluewater to mix it up. I have never had an issue with the service and the atmosphere is nice. The Fairview is always a sure thing, I've never been disappointed after an evening out there. I'm proud of my own cooking ability, very serious about cooking good fish, and I find myself disappointed when I pay good money for food of lower quality than I could prepare myself. That's how I feel at most of the restaurants in town, but never at the Fairview. The portions are refreshingly large for a fine dining establishment, and as a result we've only had dessert once, and made a designated trip for it.

great dinner

My family and I have been twice in the last couple of months and it's quickly becoming a favorite. We all had good food, a nice evening and will definately be back after the summer crowds.

Wonderful atmosphere>>>Horrible waitresses>>>Food needs improvement

My family and I have always enjoyed the Fairview Resturant for the many years we have lived in Marshfield. Last week I had a meal there and dined by myself. I had to ask that my waitress return my table 3 times so that I could get another drink and then to wrapped up my left-overs. I then waited 45 minutes to order dessert which I ended up changing my mind after the ridiculous wait. Bottom line is I was ignored because I was a one person party. I was aggrivated when I saw the tables of 3 or more be waited on the way people should be waited on. The had drinks at all times and deserts that were ordered were brought to them with coffee immediatley. Because I love the Resturant itself I went back with other family members last night and had a very classless waitress wait on us. I asked for apple crisp and they cut up apples and blackened them thinking that was apple crisp. What I meant when I said apple crisp was the crumb topping that should have been put on top usually made out of flour, brown sugar and butter sometimes with oatmeal as well. This did not mean that I wanted blackened apples. We then had to wait an additional half an hour for the check. I had to get up and ask the bartender to ring it in. This was not a busy night. It was during the week. When we first got there she only had 3 tables to wait on. For such a beautiful resturant you need to get a better wait staff and maybe better supervision in the kitchen as well. Good luck I hope you stay in business but you need to improve with a few things.

Very Good Food & Atmosphere

My wife, daughter & I regularly dine at the Fairview; in addition to other Marshfield and South Shore restaurants. On our last visit, the service was excellent, food was very good, and atmosphere was enjoyable. The Fairview is a Marshfield gem; it's almost comforting to know that if we want a very nice meal and don't want to take a chance, we head to the Fairview. Our only request is they expand the wine list; it's not up to par with the other aspects of the restaurant.

Many people here need to understand that if they want cheap grub and a Bud for dinner, the 99 is up the road in Pembroke. The Fairview is neither "pretentious" nor "rude"; it's a nice restaurant in a town which desperately needs one. If valet parking or a cordial hostess intimidates you, Burger King drive thru is always an option. I will look forward to our next lunch or dinner there; especially our first post-beach visit after this brutal winter!

Home to the Fairview

This has remained our favorite local place for a meal. Sometimes it's in the bar where we will share some appetizers and a cocktail. Sometimes it's outside to watch the freighters pass and feel the breezes. Sometimes it is for a cozy dinner for two in one of the semi-circular booths. Sometimes it is for a family gathering at a long table near the windows. They have learned to do seafood well and creatively, however the shrimp cocktail is not the best for the price. The wait staff could be better trained, especially in the summer, but we appreciate that there is probably a big turnover. Our bar waitresses have always been great. We travel extensively and internationally, but the Fairview is nice to come home to. Returned from two weeks in central America a week ago and have already been to the restaurant twice.

Why such rudeness?

I was extremely upset at the rude behavior by the hostess. I will never be back!!!! The Fairview should not be the south shore rendition of Boston's old Durgin Park. How about some common decency and respect for the people who shell out ridiculous amounts of money for poorly crafted food? Thank God there are some better places arriving in town for our real dining pleasure.

What IS with the attitude?

My friend & I went to the Fairview for coffee & dessert on a Sunday afternoon about 4:00. The hostess gave us an "ohhh" when we said we just wanted coffee & dessert. We felt totally unwelcome! Before we had finished we both went to the ladies room & when we came back, our table had been totally cleared off!
We just stood there but no one acknowledged us, so we left. Unbelievably
snobby attitude!

Just tried the burgers..they were delicious! Great lunch. I'm not sure why anyone would rather eat at the 99 instead of this place? One of the only marshfield restaurants with an ounce of class. It's not even remotely expensive-well maybe compared to McDonalds.

High end junk food

good grief !!! At these prices I would have been better off at 'The Ninety-Nine' and saved a few bucks. Enough with the pretention. This place is a 'pretender' and I'm sorry..how about dropping the attitude? My visit was regretable and the food was forgetable... but, it may take a while to rid myself of this bad experience.

Dreadful

I'm sorry but how does this place manage to stay afloat. This was my third attempt to enjoy a good meal and I was so disappointed. It's just too bad when you consider the pleasant location. Yes, it looks nice. But, if you are going to spend your hard earned dollars on a memorable meal, you would do well to dine elsewhere. The food was unremarkable and the service was spotty. Foll me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times, what was i thinking?

I thought it was cozy..

I tried the Fairview for the first time recently. I was pleasantly surprised. I had read the reviews so I didn't have very high expectations. It was very cozy, all decorated for Christmas with the fireplace lit. The food was good-better than most restuarants in Marshfield.
The server tried, but was highly insecure. She would hover by our table-afraid to interupt our conversations which was annoying.
I'll go back for sure.

unremarkable

If you are looking for a special place to dine, don't be fooled by The Fairview.
It may look appealing, but everything else about this place is disapponting. I wish someone would buy this place and give it an overhaul. The management is not very friendly or customer oriented. They cut corners with the menu. At such expensive prices, you would think they could provide fresh food and maybe a little flavor and imagination.

Review submitted on September 17th, 2004 by Bc – from Marshfield

I have to agree with Janice...

"Pedestrian fare at gourmet prices." Definitely love what they've done to the place (considering that the fire leveled the lot), but management here has got to match this wonderful decor with a menu that performs too. Missing: Caviar and truffles??? My personal rating? 2 stars out of 5. -Bc

needs to improve

I have had poor luck with food and service at The Fairview. I don't know if I'm just ordering the wrong things or maybe I'm jinxed. I would like to enjoy a dinner here some time that's uneventful. Every time I come here, something goes wrong. It's inconsistent and the food is mundane. It's too bad. This place should sparkle and I usually regret my visit. You would think I'd learn my lesson. I think it's time to try something different.

a favorite

Dinner at the Fairview is almost always a delight. In the summer, we like to sit outside and in the winter we like the bar and the fireplace. The food is usually very good and the servings so generous we often split an appetizer and an entree. The wait staff can be spotty - sometimes too "diner-like".

The food does not meet up to the cost. The onion soup was the worst I've had. Service was horrible. Just not worth it to try in the first place and definitely not worth it to go back!

Not in my budget

I read something about the meatloaf being good and thought I would give it a try. I was misled. The meatloaf was dry and bland. I thought this meal would not be expensive. Not true. It was a costly night for me. I will stay with the blue plate specials at less expensive places.

dinner club visit

My friends and I chose to visit the Fairview for our monthly informal dinner club. On the surface, the restaurant was very appealing. However, we were extremely disappointed with the quality of our food selections and it was an expensive evening. We wondered about the bar area with the fireplace. It must be nice to visit for a drink in the winter time. But, the Fairview is off our list for future dining visits.

They've lost this customer...

I have had a series of bad experiences at The Fairview and I have finally decided to let them go for good. I try to support the businesses in Marshfield and wanted to see The Fairview succeed after it was rebuilt. I have been there six times since it opened again and have not had one really positive experience. One dinner was mediocre, and that is the best I can say. The food is average, but the real problem for me is the management and service. They have a horrible time keeping a reservation and are usually very poorly organized. They seem to care more about cramming large numbers of people in rather than creating a quality experience for those people. They always rush you out the door and push you to finish your meal as fast as possible. With their reputation and prices, I also expect more than deserts that have been frozen. Why not make fresh deserts for your diners? With a fish market right around the corner, their seafood could be much fresher, too. I have tried and tried and tried to give this place every chance possible...but I finally hit the last straw. It is not worth my money to suffer through another meal there. I will now only go back if they come under new ownership/management because the current business there is a disgrace.

Horrible

The restaurant itself is nice but the food, service, management, hostess and waitress are all horrible. The hostess was snobby the food was too expensive and it tasted gross. The service was slow and management is very rude. I had a horrible experince at the Fairview and will never go there again and i will tell everyone i know to never go there.

Mixed bag

The chowder was okay...It had an unusual flavor I couldn't pinpoint (a smokey flavor). The salad was good. I thought the crabcakes had an oily residue and the center cut pork was on the dry side. It was a real mixed bag for such an expensive night out. I skipped on the dessert.

The Fairview

I frequent the Fairview and love the warmth there. The food is OK, sometimes not, but sometimes very good. The management is very attentive and basically, it's a great place to go. I sit at the bar some nights and enjoy the chit chat going on with the tv's on the sports stations. It's so much better than going to a dumpy bar where it's beer and loud rude talk, many times. The patrons are usually of the more polite persuasion, too.

Not worth the drive

Oh my Lord. All I wanted was a nice quiet dinner with my honey. Being from the bedroom community of cohasset, I was not too familiar with too many South Shore restaurants. An aquaintance from Marshfield suggested the Fairview Inn in the Brant Rock area of Marshfield. I do say, my aquaintance led me astray. First of all we were escorted into what I beleived to be the bar-room section of the restaurant. The ambiance in the bar-room was not quite what I had in mind. But that was o.k as there seemed to be a lot of merriment and laughter in the bar-room, plus my honey was able to catch the Red Sox score. I was a tad suprised that this noteworthy establishment was serving dinner out of a bar. I ordered cod encrusted with bacon. Not good. Over cooked. Much too dry. My dining partner ordered a nice juicy steak. He could not chew it in spite of the thousands of dollars worth of dental work in his mouth. I ordered cheescake with fresh berries for dessert. The cheesecake arrived with a distasteful edible flower on it. :(
I guess I will stick to dining in Cohasset for now. Bad experience. I telephoned my business associate the next day who recommended this establishment and let her know in no uncertain terms that I was very unhappy with my dining experience. South Shore diners beware. By the way, the dinner was quite costly by most standards, and definitely not worth it.

The Fairview restaurant

My husband and I have been continually going to the Fairview. The reason, mainly, is because of the warm and professionally driven staff created by the management team. The food hasn't always been up there, considering price, but it is normally good and sometimes, outstanding. When family and friends come to vist from out of state, they normally request The Fairview for our dining out dates.

We love to sit in the bar area where the atmosphere is very friendly and where other patrons end up recognizing each other, therefore new friendships have been formed there. Of course, it doesn't hurt when you drink any of their well-made cocktails. Kudo's bar maidens and bar men.

Paul and Betty are a wonderful management team and deserve a lot of credit for their winsome and friendly, professional demeanor.

Like all restaurants, there are good times and not so good times, but they shouldn't be outright condemned just because of one or two bad experiences (which is totally in the eyes of the beholders). I truly can't believe that "everything" went bad on some of those experiences that were written about in this forum.

It's worth the time and effort to frequent these nice restaurants, even through some of their bad times. My husband and I return to many restaurants that have enamored our fancy, making dining out, a joyful experience for us.

Poor Service

My husband and I have been here many times - and every time we have had poor service, with the exception of the few times we have sat at the bar. No complaints with the food, once it is on your plate and delivered to you! A bit on the pricier side and that would be OK except the service is terrible!! The wait staff is slow and unattentive and may fail to mention if they are out of a particular menu item until after you have been waiting for your meal for over 30 min!! It's too bad because they have a great atmosphere...

What's up with the mashed potatoes?

This is an interesting website. I wish I had checked it out before my visit to this place. I wanted a special night out with my girlfriend and the Fairview looked very appealing. But, there is something disjointed about this place. It’s pleasing to the eye, but the food just doesn’t do this place justice. The night started out on a good note with a drink in the bar. I bet the fireplace is nice in the winter. However, our meals were barely mediocre. My steak was thin and charred… I asked for medium rare and it was generally unappealing.
And, what is it with the mashed potatoes? How do you mess up mashed potatoes? My girlfriend first noted there was something weird about them. They tasted okay but the texture was like something that was a major distraction. It was like they were whipped potatoes and then they added lumps…like they didn’t belong there. I like either whipped mashed potatoes or lumpy mashed potatoes. Actually, I love potatoes of all kinds and textures but, these were really weird. Anyway, we got through the evening and I wished that I had just stayed closer to home. Sometimes the best places are in your own back yard and we drive right past them to get to places like this. Live and learn. Hey, it will be easier to stay local if the gas prices keep rising. Oh yeah, why all the pretentiousness at the Fairview? I don’t get the attitude.

Disappoint Plus

I recently held a wedding rehearsal party the the Fairview Inn. I had booked this event about 10 wks ahead of time. I had a choice of dining areas. The main dining room (which is actually more like 2 rooms) which had a nice ocean view or the bar area with no view. Naturally I chose the main dining area. I had a choice; my guests could have a "special menu" with 3 choices of entree, appetizer, dessert at a fixed price of $37.00 not including tax or tip or beverage. I chose the special menu. BIG MISTAKE!! I got ripped off to say the least. I had cod which was mediocre at best. Several of my party chose steak. Most folks that had steak told me it was "tough". The only good part of the meal was the salad. The salad was good. Then the kicker was when it came to dessert, we were told that cheesecake was the only option for dessert. I paid for a choice of 3 desserts: cheesecake with fresh berries, bread pudding, or ice cream or sorbet. When I questioned the waitress she told me that her instruction was "cheesecake was the only choice". Not everybody likes cheeesecake. A majority of my guests passed on the cheesecake and had no dessert. When I requested of the waitress to bring my husband a dessert off the regular menu, she brought him chocolate cake. The cake looked pretty but tasted pretty awful. Like another reviewer on this board, the chocolate cake had been hauled out of a freezer and was not quite defrosted; either that or it had freezer burn.
Also, when I arrived at the restaurant, my party was lead into the bar!!! We did not get the main dining room. Instead of an ocean view, we had loud noise and a ball game. Also we were placed up against the back wall which prevented conversation
Most of my guests were out of towners from colorado. It was my first meeting with them. I was not only disappointed but very embarrassed that such a poor meal was provided. They would have loved an ocean view, but the Fairview took it upon themselves to place us in the bar. Also I might add, the approx 2 wks prior to this event, I received a rude phone call from the proprietor. She was ready to cancel my reservation because another party had come in and wanted to book a rehearsal party. Mind you, these folks came in 2 wks before the event; I booked 10 weeks in advance. It must have been a friend of the owners and they must have got my seating plan in the main dining room. I would not recommend the Fairview for any special event. If you do plan an event there, don't get a special menu. You will get ripped off! I dropped over $700.00 that evening and all I got was anger and disappointment and 16 bad meals with a bad view!

Pedestrian fare at gourmet prices

I have been disappointed with The Fairview Inn. My best meal there was the 'Tueday night meatloaf' special. But, for the most part, the meals have been forgettable and pricey. I think they do a better job with seafood and I have yet to get a decent cut of meat. The chowder is okay and the salads are very good. Skip dessert here...very disappointing. The 'cheesecake with berries' didn't come with berries but a thin veneer of fruit sauce....it was bland. I have also tried the chocolate cake and it looked impressive but, there was a decided previously-frozen taste...couldn't finish this. The prices are steep for such disappointing inconsistent fare. If you must do the Brant Rock area...this is a nice place for a drink. For food, save your money and try one of the other restaurants at the bottom of the hill.

A Very Upsetting Experience =(

I recently organized a special event at the Fairview which had been booked with them for a number of months. I was hosting many guests at this event and felt confident that The Fairview would do a nice job. Boy, was I mistaken. I had reserved a room with a nice view of the ocean but at the last minute they decided to move my party to the backroom bar with no view at all and lots of noise. We had chosen a special menu for this event and paid for it, but The Fairview failed to meet their end of the bargain. The cod dinner was fine, but the the steak and pork dinners were both poorly cooked and did not please my guests. We also paid for the choice of three desserts but we were only offered one when the time came: Cheesecake or nothing is what we were told. The management treated us rudely and had a very clear attitude when we spoke to them over the phone and in person. It was incredibly upsetting and disappointing that The Fairview failed us in so many ways...particularly through poor management skills, poor food, and failing to keep the dinner arrangements they had promised. I loved the old Fairview but I will not return to this one unless it comes under new ownership. They simply do not deserve my business after embarrassing me at this special event. I would urge anyone to avoid eating here if they can, and I would especially urge people not to hold any special events here. It may have a great view, but it is not worth the frustration they put you through. You may not even get the view, anyway, because you culd be moved into the bar area at the last minute like we were.

Fantastic view, service, and food!

The old Fairview used to be one of my favorite restaurants, and the new one far exceeds my expectations (which were very high!). The food is always fresh, and the chef does a fantastic job of preparing very tasty daily specials. The servers are friendly and gracious, and the view is the best on the south shore. Looking forward to seeing lots of the Fairview this summer.....kudos to the new owners!

I had the worst dining experience in a long time. Took my mother and husband there at 5:30p.m. on a Saturday night and ordered the Special, roast sirloin. Our waitress kept "forgetting" about us and our food was fatty and overcooked, when I didn't touch the food, the waitress asked me if there was anything wrong, and I explained the problem, she told the manager, went into the kitchen and then came back telling me there was nothing she could do. We were there with appetizers and dinner, no dessert, 3 hours. I would never go back and have told everyone who asks me not to go there as well. My job requires me to eat out regularly in order to make restaurant recommendations to our staff to pass onto to our clients, I can't remember having such a disappointing experience. Such a beautiful restaurant, but the food and service did not do it justice.

Too Bad the Old Fairview is gone

I was a regualr customer of the old Fairview and loved the local feel sining neighbors and friends. The food was fine at a reasonable price and in general wass a funn place to visit. Yes the new building is fine however it reminds me of a chain restaurant in a Mall. The food is overpriced and not really fresh.

Better than I expected, but EXPENSIVE!

The first two times we went to the Fairview was before the Big Fire. The first trip wasn't a pleasant one. But after hearing so many good things about the place, we gave it a second chance. The second trip was worse than the first, and we vowed never to go back. But someone gave us a gift certificate, so...

The new place is very attractive, and the food was quite good this time. However, the prices are WAY too high. $21 for a 10-oz steak out in the middle of nowhere is simply too high for this place. While the food was good, it wasn't THAT good. Perhaps the extra price is based on the fabulous view of the ocean. But at night when it's dark, it might as well be a fabulous view of the landfill.

So for the same money, I'll take a few minutes off the drive time and eat at the Fieldston.

Location, Location

The Fairview is attractive on the inside but the best part of the Fairview is the outside porch in the summertime. Looking at the water having a nice frosty drink makes me happy. But I agree, the food is not that good. I guess the answer to that is, have a few drinks before you order, then everything will taste just fine!

Been to the Faiview a couple of times and the atmosphere is fine although it is a definate copy of the chain restaurants one finds in a Mall. The food is inconsistant but the prices are cinsistantly high.

Overall the new Fairview is no where as good as the old place that unlike the new represented the character and uniqueness of our town.

Ambiance gets an A+

This remains my favorite restaurant in Marshfield. The food is fine, not great but I absolutely love the ambiance and that is sometimes all you need. My favorite thing to do is sit in the bar area and order a caesar salad and shrimp pesto pizza to share with my husband. Again, the food is certainly not Fieldston quality but it really is a lovely place to eat.

Went there once after they opened. Nice atmosphere. but, I found it very expensive. Maybe go back for a special occasion, but not on our weekly "date". I was hoping for the good ol' Fairview - oh well. Food was okay, nothing to rave about, small portions, big price.
