Restaurant reviews for The Fieldston

Fieldston, Awful

Went to the Fieldston as a last minute decision. Entered, restaurant was mostly empty on a Saturday night (first bad sign). Ordered two drinks, my wife ordered a Captain and diet. Do not know what we received, but it was not C&D. Tried again, tasted funny, but drank it. Wife ordered jumbalaya and I, lobster Mac & Cheese. Jumbalaya barely had any seafood & Lobster Mac was cold in the middle. Sent it back for heating and received it back with some melted cheese on top and still cold. Had it wrapped. Wife ordered second drink, it was disgusting. After complaint, waiter informed us that they were out of Captain and used something else (apparently chose not to tell us ahead of time). Suggested to waiter that he take something off of the bill, as everything was bad. He did not. So we paid, told him we would not come back, and went to leave. As we approached the door we were confronted by a guy passing the bar. He asked, "are you from Marshfield?" I said yes. He asked, "do you know many people in Marshfield?" I said, yes, we do. He replied, "well tell them not to come back also." Turns out this was Jan, the owner. I guess we know why his restaurant was empty on a Saturday night! Apparently, he doesn't like people from Marshfield. Maybe he should move his restaurant to Dorchester, he would fit right in.

Enjoyed the Fieldston

After being intimidated by its reputation as a "gourmet restaurant," I decided to give the Fieldston a try. To my surprise, I found it no more expensive than other Marshfield restaurants. In truth, the menu is rather small, but there are enough options to choose from.
Having, at last, discovered the Fieldston, I have gone there several times and have always enjoyed it. The waiter has always been friendly and knowledgeable. I have enjoyed their apetizers from spring rolls to crab cakes, and have enjoyed the club steaks, the veal parmesan, and the stuffed filet of sole among the entrees.
After dinner, I have gone to the small but pleasant bar and find the barmaid most pleasant and the atmosphere relaxing. I would prefer the hidden gem, the Fieldston, to fighting crowds at some of the other restaurants in town.

Will not try this place again

We recently moved to Brant Rock and since we work late frequently, we eat out often. We were looking forward to our first meal at the Fieldston. Where to begin? The place was dark and not very inviting and really looked like it needed to be painted and spruced up a bit. The food, on the other hand, was just awful. The dishes were overpriced and the portions served were extremely small and tasteless. When we left, we were in agreement. We did not enjoy our dining experience and will not return.
It just was not worth the time or effort.

Great place to eat, but...

Love eating there, but think it's time to update the menu that is linked to this website. April 2002 was a long time ago and I can't understand why no one from the Fieldston hasn't bothered to rectify the situation. The times I've been there it seems that the place is not nearly patronized as it should and could be. Advertising goes a long way. Seeing an outdated site such as this could cause one to think that they have closed.

What a joke

I am new to the area and someone recommended I go there. I wish I did not take his advice. It was pathetic. Our portions were tiny and tasted terrible. I went on Italian night and it was awful. The marinara sauce tasted like it had brown sugar in it -- Totally Gross! After a disappointing meal the worst part was getting the check. If you want tiny portions, lousy food and a big bill -- Fieldston's is the place to go!

The food is great

We were on our way to another Marshfield restaurant and saw this place. It looks like a place you can easily just drive by and not notice. Anyway, we stopped and we were evry much surprised. The food was great... gourmet quality and the prices were decent too. We will be back.

Our fav place

What can I say but that this is our favorite place to eat. Summer on the deck or winter by the fire, we love it!

Consistently decent dining experience.

Okay, The Fieldston continues to be a well kept secret in Marshfield. It is consistent and the people are great. It gets little notice but maybe it just doesn't stand out along the roadside. When I want a nice meal, I come to The Fieldston. Sure, I may go to Ember for a special occasion because it's more spacious and it has a certain allure... but Ember can get expensive. The Fieldston has excellent food and the prices are reasonable. For me, it's best in the warmer weather and I can sit on the porch with a nice white sangria.
Another good choice in Marshfield is The Lobster Tale with their regular deliveries of seafood from the Brant Rock Fish Market. It doesn't get much better or FRESHER than the Brant Rock Fish Market.
But wait...we are talking about The Fieldston here... and, I must say I have had some excellent seafood here as well.
In short... The Fieldston is a very good choice for you dining dollars. You won't be disappointed.

WONDERFUL RESTAURANT

The Fieldston is a gem!!! The food is incredible, we go there about once a month and have always had a wonderful meal there. The scallop appetizer and the egg roll appetizers are incredible. The seafood pasta dish is a must!!

Won't go back...

The staff is VERY unfriendly and some of the waitresses 'appeared' to know what they're doing, but ours certainly didn't. They were either out of items or brought food to us that was not what we ordered. One of our main meals was ok, but the other was dry, unflavorful and not tasty at all. We were really looking forward to a nice evening out, and it was frustrating to have such poor service and bad food. We won't be back...

We really enjoyed this restaurant

My wife and I stopped in for dinner this last week. First time we'd been there since moving to the area a number of months back. We really enjoyed it- the food was good but service could have been a touch better. The homemade applesauce with the pork was downright excellent.

boring

horrid experience, i found this place to be unfreindly, with a limited menu that never changes, it is no suprise that this places parking lot is always empty

Three words "change your menu!" Same old, same old. Went last night and had to walk out. They didnt have the wine we wanted, had Eggplant Parmesan on for a special(real special huh?}, and there isnt a steak to be found. I dont think we'll be back unless Jan gets his act togeather and spends some creative time on menu planning.

My Favorite

The Fieldston is my favorite place. The food is wonderful, the atmosphere is intimate, the waitstaff are friendly and the location is nice. It's nice to walk on the beach after dinner. I agree with the person who says it is Marshfield's (as well as the South Shore's) best kept secret.

A find

The Fieldston is easy to miss, but worth the trip. I make a meal of one of their pizzas, but the rest of the menu is good, too. Wish they had more fish dishes (not shrimp or shellfish, but finny fish). Cozy bar is nice, too.

Good food...

I ate at the Fieldston tonight for the first time. I had read the reviews and was excited to try it as I just moved to marshfield from boston. The ambience was ok, I think it would feel more cozy in the winter..the benches were a little uncomfortable, but I did like the dark candlelit setting. We probably should have sat outside! The service was good, quite fast, but the restaurant was only 30% full.
The hummus and bread they served were fabulous..the hummus was nicely flavored and full of garlic. I had the spareribs, they were very flavorful, but I only got 6 or so ribs..a man with a big appetite would have left hungry. My husband got lamb kabobs, they were quite good, but just not a large quantity. The mashed potatoes were nicely flavored.
Overall it was very good, I do think it's a bit overpriced for what you get, but it won't keep me from coming back.

great restaurant

Had a very pleasant experience dining this past Saturday evening, beautiful breeze on the porch, very good service and of course a great dinner. I'll be back.

Love this place

I am so thrilled the warm weather is here and I can dine on the porch. I have never been disappointed at The Fieldston. Friendly service and the food is consistently prepared to perfection.

The best in Marshfield

Yes, this place is the best. I have never been disappointed here. It's such a pleasure to go somewhere and know you will be getting real value for your dining dollar. The Fieldston is creative and ambitious with a real flair for presentation.

I think this place is Marshfield's best kept secret. Kudos to the chef! Okay, it can be a little pricey but the food is always interesting and I like the presentation. Okay, the booths can be a little uncomfotable and the space is tight but it's a small sacrifice to pay for a great meal. I like the porch.

Nice Restaurant

I have eaten at this restaurant several times. It is consistently good, very cozy, nice place for an intimate dinner or special date. It is by far the best restaurant in Marshfield. A restaurant of this caliber has been long overdue in this town.

Better than Boston

What a surprise: great "downtown" food way out in the suburbs! Everything about our experience was terrific, the menu was interesting and full, food was good, its presentation had flair and style, and it was served in a timely manner. Service was cordial and efficient. We were lucky and were seated in the fireplace room which is small and comfy with a fire burning (unfortunately it was a gas log rather than wood, but still nice). Somewhat expensive for a suburban restaurant, but worth the cost. Can't wait to go back!

Outstanding, but pricey

One of the best meals I've ever had. I'm talking "I wish I could lick the plate" good. Warm, romantic atmosphere. Great service, and the owner is friendly. Great place for a date or anniversary (I don't think I'd take kids there). I wish I could afford to eat there more often. Newcomers should keep in mind not to confuse the Fieldston with the Fairview (common mistake).

nice and quiet

I like this place although we can't afford to eat there often. The food is good. The employees are nice also. The bar seats about eight, but you can sit by the fireplace. We had a great time at a wine tasting dinner last spring. This is a special occasion place to eat at. Try the venison or crab cakes if they are on the menu.

My favorite restaurant

Been there too many times to count...food is much better now that the owner is the chef. They are closed Monday and Tuesday, and most of the month of January. My kids love the ribs...I'm partial to the Mozzarella Tomato salad and the swordfish. Great place to meet for drinks or dinner...new room with fireplace and cushy chairs is great.

Great for a date

My wife and I have been there twice - enjoyed it both times. It's possibly the most elegant restaurant in Marshfield and would be a perfect place to impress someone on a first date.

Be sure that they're open before you go over there, especially during the winter. They seem to be closed for vacation a lot, and they're not open every day.

Been there one time

The food was mediocre, the service slow, and the price was high.

Excellent

An excellent experience in every aspect. A true treasure to have right here in our own backyard.
