Review submitted on May 12th, 2010 by The Grouchy Old Bastard from Marshfield Time Capsule If you want to know how people ate in the 50's, this is it. No style or atmosphere at all to speak of. No flavor in the breading they use to cover almost everything on the menu either. This is what dining out was like a 50 or 60 years ago. They don't take credit cards, just like the 50's. Anyone who thinks this is the best seafood on the south shore obviously doesn't get around much. It's mediocre at best. Yes, you can get some broiled fish, and the lobster bisque is not bad. Other than that, it's pretty bland stuff. It's a good place to take your grandma when she comes to visit. She's likely to enjoy the way food tasted during the Eisenhower administration more than you will. With all the plethora of great local seafood available why bury in under all that tasteless breading? Hire a kid right out of Johnson and Wales culinary school, and start adding some current thinking to the menu. Leave the old stuff there for those who want it. Lighter, better seasoned, fresher local produce, and local seafood are key ingredients, and would be a huge improvement. Review submitted on September 18th, 2009 by Ken from Napa,Calif Keep it just the way it is! I only found this place because I remember it as a child when I grew up in Scituate. Yes, they allow people from Scituate in.
Review submitted on August 19th, 2009 by Jeff from Sawyerville, Quebec Canada The Best Lobster Chowder and Lobster casserole are the best I have ever had. Review submitted on August 4th, 2009 anonymously from Green Harbor Who needs "new-fangled"? Haddad's has always been amazing, every time I've gone there. The food is fresh, the service is excellent, and you'll always see someone you know there. Many people have complained that it needs to update it's menu. Why change something that's been around for so long, with such success? If you want something hip and happening, don't go here. But if you want quality food, amazing service, and a good, family atmosphere, GO TO HADDAD'S! Review submitted on September 23rd, 2008 anonymously from Brant Rock Absolutely Fabulous My family and I (we're new to the area) recently went to Haddad's for the first time. We knew nothing about it and our expectations(judging by the outside of the building) were not very high. How surprised and happy we were to have an unexpected and wonderful dining experience. It is certainly not fancy. It's plain, pretty clean and no, I did not smell anything unusual when I entered. The employees were lovely. They were friendly, helpful and most willing to make recommendations. The waitstaff was busy but they were still attentive. The food was wonderful. It was fresh, abundant, tasty. It was served quickly and efficiently and it was just a pleasure to be able to enjoy a simple, great tasting, well priced meal in a congenial, friendly, welcoming, neighborhood atmosphere. One of my favorite restaurants on the South Shore is Mezzo Mare in Hull and Haddad's ranks right up there beside it. I will frequently return to this restaurant and would recommend it to anyone who likes fresh seafood. Review submitted on July 25th, 2008 by Jay from Marshfield No one even close Haddads has the best food on the south shore hands down. Chuck and his family do an incredible job and the waitresses and bartenders are very polite. The Lobster bisque is to die for. Haddads will be the best place on the south shore for years to come. Good job Chuckie Review submitted on May 12th, 2008 by Roger from Johnsonburg PA Six years and counting My brother ,friends and myself have been coming to Marshfield for six years to do some fishing with the Roth family. The Roth's told us to go to Haddad's for a bite to eat. Now we will not make this trip without eating at Haddad's.
Review submitted on October 8th, 2007 anonymously Best Place Ever I think Haddad's the best restaurant in Marshfield! The food is always great, no matter what you order. and the people that work couldn't be nicer! Nice job Boys! Review submitted on July 12th, 2007 by Former Marshfield Resident from Mid West Don't change a thing I grew up in Marshfield and my family would eat here once a week. The Seafood is excellent, Very Fresh! I moved about 12 years ago but when I visit the first night we are there we eat here. I love that they have not changed the dining area. It brings back memories and it has a certain charm. The batter is light but that is what I like about it. It is not smothered with other tastes. The staff is always smiling and great. Sure wish we had one out here. I never noticed any bad smells, havn't been out in a couple years but I am willing to bet it is just someone wanting to complain. Review submitted on July 7th, 2007 by greenhbrbeachlova from Marshfield Our favorite restaurant in town for over 25 years We love Haddad's! We have been going here for well over 25 years, and we have never been disappointed. They know how to cook calamari and the seafood is the best. I've never bought steak tips here, although my husband raves about them. If I want seafood I go to Haddad's. Review submitted on May 27th, 2007 anonymously from Marshfield What is that smell I stopped in a month ago to pick up my takeout order. Boy was i lucky it was takeout, the smell? What is it? It smells like urine. I do not know how people can stand to have a drink in there never mind a meal. YUCK. I was affraid to eat the fish and chips. Seriously Review submitted on March 7th, 2007 by joeyjojo shabadoo from Marshfield No thanks I walked in to order a pizza. It smelled like a men's room in my opinion. Instead, I asked for a take-out menu (I guess I felt awkward) and left. Review submitted on March 4th, 2007 by jim, maribeth, kids best food on south shore great food, great people, our entire family enjoys haddad's great lunch and dinners, thank you chuck. Review submitted on December 15th, 2006 by Susan from Green Harbor Blah batter We went to Haddad's this week (after a long absence) and were disappointed yet again. As soon as we tasted the onion rings, clams, etc., we remembered why we had been avoiding the place. They must use the most blah batter possible. No matter how many times we added salt and pepper, the fried food was tasteless.
Review submitted on November 10th, 2006 by Mr. Review from Duxbury Haddad's is a classic I've been dining at Haddad's for four years, two or three times per month.
Review submitted on September 13th, 2006 by The Grouchy Old Bastard Tired food in a cleaned up restaurant I read the review from "The Big Guy" and he's right. Hadad's has cleaned up and make things look better, but it's time to chuck the 1950's menu. It needs to move away from breaded and fried everything menu. It's the last place I've heard of that still makes breaded fried lobster, I tried it once and it was nasty. Their lobster chowder made from all the leftover lobsters and culls is fantastic. Their breading on the fish is devoid of flavor, I wonder is it just plain corn flour? They need to make more broiled seafood, steamers, and lighter more flavorful seafood items. The boiled lobsters are fine. They need to dump the horrible grapenut pudding and try some local pies or cakes instead.
Review submitted on July 25th, 2006 by Melissa from Marshfield, MA Good food! I am not a seafood eater but I got their chicken parm one night (to go) and it was delicious, not to mention huge! I highly recommend eating there. It definitely has a lot of character. And I haven't heard a bad thing about their seafood either. :) Review submitted on July 18th, 2006 by JAMBROSE from Rexhame It may be old school, but for fried seafood Haddad's is the place in Marshvegas! I notice that many people in this forum talk about the crooked floors and outdated interior of Haddad's. Some have even used the term "dirty". To me, these are the factors that make it such a unique local establishment. Just because it's old doesn't mean its dirty, it just means it has "character". The fried seafood here is the freshest and most consistent in the South Shore area. The breading is so light that you can eat an entire seafood platter and still have room for a couple of Corona's. I suspect that any negative comments about Haddad's are coming from people who don't reside in Marshvegas or are summer visitors (this doesn't include Foster Ave). My parents used to call them "soupeaters". I for one will always support local Marshfield restaurants and Haddad's is at the top. Review submitted on July 4th, 2006 by The Big Guy from Marshfield It's like going back in time A trip to Hadad's is like a trip back to the 1950's which coincidently is the last time they cleaned the restrooms, or do they wait for the tide from the next Noreaster to do that? Looking through the kitchen door as you wait for you table may put you off your food so it's best not to look. I've seen cleaner grease pits at fast lube shops. The breading they put on the fish is completely tasteless, I don't think it even has salt or pepper in it. Yeah it's cheap, so what do you expect right? Well if I'm going out to a restaurant it's because I want something better than I can make at home, in this case I can do better than watery overcooked vegetables, cold bread, barely chilled tap beer, and onion rings carelessly made in one huge clump. They need an "enema" to clean out the old standards and modernize Review submitted on May 28th, 2006 by leo from florida always an excellent dinner i moved away about a year and a half ago and i can't wait to visit haddad's again. the food is outstanding and the portions are always perfect. you are treated like the only one in the place even if it is packed. so to all those who can't get past the "local" atmosphere, you don't belong there anyway. I'm sure you would be more comfortable paying $100 for dinner for two. so if you don't need an extensive wine list and love great food, try haddad's. I guarantee you will love it. Review submitted on February 26th, 2006 anonymously from marshfield 7 years of good eating Myself and my husband have been eating at haddads for the seven years we have lived here. We have never had a bad meal. If i had to pick a favorite it would be hard everything is great. The staff is always very freindly-- We will eat at haddads for the next seven years. Good prices and large portions. Review submitted on February 20th, 2006 by me from marshvegas baby!!!! BEST EVA FOOD IN THE TOWN LIVED HERE MY WHOLE LIFE, LOVED THE FOOD EVA SINCE. THERE REALLY WHAT THIS TOWN IS ABOUT.....SEAFOOD AND FRIENDS.....DONT CHANGE ANYTHING GUYS ......!!!!!!!!!!!! Review submitted on February 7th, 2006 by Gillian from Marshfield Best in town !!! Easily this is the best place in town to eat and I don't even eat fish.My family visit me from Ireland regularly and we HAVE to go there at least twice.Great food, prices, staff and a ten all round.Even when the place wasn't looking the best it didn't even matter cause you feel so welcome and you know you are getting your money's worth. The portions are huge and we always leave with leftovers for a midnight snack. My father has even bought chowder and frozen it to take home to Ireland. He texts me when he eats it to let me know how good it is,lol.I recommend it to everyone to go here more than once! Review submitted on December 9th, 2005 by Bob Mann from Oxford England Great grub once again. have just returned from another visit to your lovely shores, again we visited Haddads, the twin boiled lobsters were a sight for sore eyes ,the steak were perfectly cooked and the staff as friendly and attentive as usual. Review submitted on July 21st, 2005 by 28 10th from Sinking Spring PA "Lobsta Chowda" and Fisherman's Platter As a once a year visitor, for 3 to 5 days, I always make sure we get our fill of the "OC". Its not uncommon to show up 2-3 times for great food, and the best hosts you will find in Brant Rock. If you go make sure you have the Lobsta Chowda. We always bring a quart back to PA. Hope to see you soon Chuck. Review submitted on June 30th, 2005 by bill wallace "TUNA" from WILHOIT,ARIZONA "I SURE LOVE THE FRIED CLAMS" WHEN EVER I COME HOME FOR A VISIT-I MAKE SURE I HAVE THE FRIED CLAMS AT "HADDAD'S OCEAN CAFE" HELLO TO CHUCK AND MY FAVORITE WAITRESS: SHARON. Review submitted on May 26th, 2005 anonymously overrated The food just didn't really do it for us. For the money, we'll take our money to Bluewater or the Fairview. It's just not a good value. Review submitted on December 23rd, 2004 by chuck from hanover Renovations Needed The casual atmosphere is nice and the food is great. Couldn't they spend a little on renovations? Review submitted on December 16th, 2004 by Barry from Norwell Always wanted to try Being lovers of "local" places we had always wanted to try Haddad's. Went in on a Sunday evening, hardly anyone in the place, it looked cool, but what is that smell?? Sat at the bar for a couple of drinks and absorbed some local flavor, but what is that smell?? Did the place get flooded? Did the septic system overflow? Combine those odors and thats what the place smelled like. Did manage to convice (not an easy task) my wife to sit and try the food. The booth was really run down. Much to our suprise the food was really good. Chowder was excellent and the fried fisherman's platter was as well.
Review submitted on December 6th, 2004 by Bob Mann from Oxford UK Worth the thousands of miles travel for the lobster alone What a great place, the food ,the staff the atmosphere and most all all Chuck Haddad, an allround great guy. I will come back again and again to Brant Rock just to go to Haddads. Thanks for making our vacation one to remember yet again. Review submitted on November 23rd, 2004 anonymously from MARSHFIELD GREAT FOOD..GREAT PEOPLE HADDADS OCEAN CAFE HAS THE BEST FOOD AROUND. ALWAYS CONSISTENT..ALWAYS GREAT SERVICE. 5 STARS!!!! Review submitted on November 13th, 2004 by SEA FOOD LOVER from MARSHFIELD HADDADS IS GREAT GREAT FRESH SEAFOOD, REASONABLE PRICES, FRIENDLY PROMPT WAIT STAFF, AND OWNERS WERE ON LOCATION AND VERY NICE PEOPLE. Review submitted on October 20th, 2004 by Jason E. from marshfield Awsome The owner is a great person. he is right in there workin like crazy. it is a very comnfortable place with very good food, and large portions. youll feel like you know everyone in town. A++++++++++++++++++. Review submitted on September 17th, 2004 by Bc from Marshfield Oh yeah.... I love dog-eared joints like this. The furniture is tired looking, there isn't even beer on tap, but it's got that old-fashion, sea-faring diner feel, complete with non-matching place settings. A guy can feel right at home here. There's just one flaw... the summer crowds. Ouch! Forget about going here if you're hungry around 7 pm. You'll never get seated.
Review submitted on August 29th, 2004 anonymously from Marshfield Never again Too much fried food. Too much sauce on food. NO wine list, in fact the only wine was small bottles of poor wine. Forget it - never again. Review submitted on August 10th, 2004 anonymously from Marshfield BEST ON THE SOUTH SHORE Haddad's is the best on the South Shore by far! Not only is their seafood amazing but they have the best buffalo bites as well! Where else can you go for a great meal, great service and an owner who knows your name?? Review submitted on June 17th, 2004 by Anonymous from Marshfield Over-priced and underportioned After being highly recommended by several people, we decided to give it another shot. We were totally disappointed in the portion size and over-all quality. The seafood was greasy, perhaps not cooked in oil that had reached temperature. The batter was straight cornmeal, not a nice, crispy batter that you would expect seafood to be cooked in. The vegetables were definitely canned, not fresh, and mushy.
Review submitted on April 12th, 2004 by Bob Best Fried Clams The fried clams are the best on the South Shore. The restaurant is a tradition in Marshfield. Review submitted on April 8th, 2004 by Mike and Andrea from Duxbury Amazing Baked stuffed Lobster we visited haddads restaurant on a Saturday with 4 out of town relatives looking for a place with great lobsters. we started out by having a drink at the bar and being entertained by that always friendly bartender, Donna. Four of us opted for the easy way out and ordered the lazy lobster casserole, and 2 of us had the whole baked stuff lobster. the casseroles where outstanding, fresh, and hot with just the right amount of butter and bread crumbs over them. However, the 2 baked stuffed lobsters where simply amazing. there where chunks of extra lobster in the crumb stuffing and the lobsters themselves where moist and sweet. Our out of town friends found out quickly what us regulars have known for along time, that the building doesn't look like much from the outside but the food is great and reasonable Review submitted on March 21st, 2004 anonymously from marshfield haddads restaurant THE BEST FOOD IN TOWN BY FAR AND THE FOOD IS ALWAYS HOT , THE WAITSTAFF HAS BEEN THERE FOREVER , A TEN IN OUR BOOK Review submitted on March 13th, 2004 by Jim M from Marshfield This place an update in a big way American resaurants have evolved in the past 30 years. Young chefs have moved the cuisine forward with new ingredients and a more sophisicated handling of ingredients. A menu of mostly fried food, watery canned vegetables, and freezing unheated dirty rest rooms is not a pleasant night out. Service is slow and haphazard you never know when what will arrive, and the place is dingy. There is no excuse for not keeping up with the evolving tastes of the people who have moved to Marshfield in the last few years. More sophisticated urbane people have moved in, and this old time resaurant is really starting to look long in the tooth. If the updated the menu with some more non fried seafood, used fresh ingredients instead of canned, and provided clean, HEATED rest rooms it would be a good start. Review submitted on December 31st, 2003 by Herls from Marsh-vegas always good food I have been eating at Haddad's since the early seventies and the food and service is always top notch, the waitresses and bartenders are always friendly and professional, also where else does the owner come out of the kitchen and ask if everthing is good. Review submitted on December 5th, 2003 anonymously from Brant Rock Great Great Seafood, Great Prices, Friendly staff and we always leave smiling.
Review submitted on December 5th, 2003 anonymously from Marshfield Haddads is quite good The best lobster bisque on the South Shore and great lunch specials...good family dining and a friendly atmosphere Review submitted on December 4th, 2003 anonymously Once was enough They don't take credit cards. Their highly vaunted food was mediocre and expensive. The service was slow. The atmosphere was non existant. Made me feel like I had to be a regular to eat there, and that I was the outsider. |
