Restaurant reviews for The Lobster Tale

I Shant Return

I recently dined here, and although two weeks have passed, I feel I must warn others that this restaurant is not worth the trip down from Boston. The whole experience, from beginning to end, was just awful. The bartender was as SLOW as Molasses, even though the bar itself was not busy at all. As for the actual dining experience, it was less than stellar. We had a reservation for a private table and was seated in the bar area, although the restaurant was mostly vacant. Our table was an upgrade from the original offer for a seat in the cold doorway by the bar. We sat at our table for twenty minutes with empty glasses while the waitress was nowhere to be found. When she reappeared, we asked her for our drinks, but she did not come back with them until we asked a second time- after waiting another twenty minutes. We placed our order for Crab Cakes, Rack of Lamb and Lazy-Man Lobster. After a very long wait, we received our crab cakes, which were luke-warm and nearly raw. Finally, after a long wait again, the meal arrived. The Rack of Lamb was alright, but nothing to remember. The Lazy-Man Lobster was actually a casserole or bake of some sort, covered in dry bread crumbs and surrounded in a large pool of butter. When we asked the waitress if she gave us the right meal (Lazy man Lobster in Boston is usually Lobster out of it's shell- plain and simple, with a side of butter), she nastily retorted, that's how we do it, that's what Lazy Man Lobster is!" Sorry, I didn't know, I order it all the time, and it has never looked like that. What confused me is that I saw the Lobster Casserole on the menu, descibed exactly as what I received. Perplexing. After we finished eating, the waitress went missing again as we waited too long for the bill. When we finally got the bill, we were more than ready to leave. I have never left less than twenty percent for a waitress, but the service was so awful and the waitress and bartender so SLOW, I left fifteen percent, which was much more than she deserved. That night, I felt sick to my stomach and we both decided, we shant return again.

Very Impressed

This was my second time at this restaurant. I had such a good experience the first time with my husband that I chose to take my parents here when they came to visit. My father and I started with the clam chowder which was amazing. My mother doesn't like seafood, so she ordered the Steak tips. She was impressed with how flavorful they were. My father got a Salmon dish off of the "specials" and said that it was delicious. He didn't have anything left on his plate when he was finished, so I believed him. I ordered the Lazyman's Lobster with fried sweets (My husband and I were so obsessed with those that I ordered some extra so that I could bring them home for him). All in all, it was a great experience and I definitely recommend it.

Not My Choice

Been to the Lobster Tale numerous times. It has gone from good to bad. The restaurant has a good selection on the menu and generally the food has been good, but the last few times have been disappointing. The food just keeps getting worse. My food has come out of the kitchen luke warm on my last two visits and the flavor is lacking.

As far as the wait staff goes, most of them need to get some manners. They act as though your there to give them a good tip regardless of the service. If you try to flag down a wait person they act as though they don't see you and just walk away. I guess it has to be their way or no way?? If your not ready to place your order when they are ready to take it you will have a difficult time getting them to come back within a reasonable time. I would say that in the last four visits I was satisfied with only one of the servers (sorry, but I didn't get the persons name). I have also noticed that the place really smells bad lately, like a wet or dirty carpet, something like that.

Anyway, I don't plan on returning to this establishment anytime soon. I guess you could say that I'm fed up with it. I'm generally an understanding person and tend to put up with lousy service provided the food is great, but I'm done with this place. Wait people have to remember that their tip depends on the service they provide. If you give lousy service, don't expect a good tip, but the only time your nice is when you drop the check at the table and give a FAKE smile, then you say "I'll take that when your ready" only to show up 15 minutes later and I was ready 13 minutes ago. I would have loved to write a better review, however it just wasn't deserving.

First and Last Time I Eat Here!

My husband and I stopped at the Lobster Tale for dinner last night. There are a few positives, so I'll start there. The wine was good and the beer was cold. The Lobster Bisque and the Clam Chowder were both good, but not great. The rolls were warm and fresh. That said, the service was very poor. We waited 50 minutes for food and the place was not that busy - it was a Monday night after all. Nobody checked on us. We had to ask for water and that took 10 minutes to come. The waitress was not informed, she did not give us all the side options (potatoes and veggies) and when I asked how much longer for our food she rudely told me that everyone had to wait a long time not just us!

I ordered the crab cake appetizer for a meal. It was advertised as more crab than cake, but that was simply not true. It tasted like a frozen dinner. The sauce served with it was very good, but sauce does not make a meal. My husband had the swordfish oscar (I think that was the name) special. Everyting on his plate was cold (not luke warm....cold). When you wait almost an hour for food you expect it to be at the very least hot. Cold mashed potatoes are inedible and his asparaus looked and tasted like they came from a can.

We did "complain" to the waitress and she got approval from the manager to take the cost of my husbands dinner off the bill, but at that point we were hungry and unhappy. We felt that at an average of $18-20 per meal (soup and salad not included) the food should have been better and the service more timely. The manager should have come over to talk to us instead of hanging the waitress (who was obviously new) out to dry.

Unfortunately it was our first experience and we will not be back.

Never a bad meal since day one

My husband and I frequent the lobster tale at least twice a week. We have NEVER had a bad meal and everyone there bends over backwards to make it a great experience. The bartenders are great and if you don't see a certain thing on the menu, Matt or whoever is cooking will make it for you. How can you beat that. NEVER EVER had a bad meal. God honest truth.

Awesome Breakfast!!!!

Since some of the other breakfast places have closed when I saw the Lobster Tail now had breakfast on weekends I decided to give it a try. I assumed it would be a little pricey but it wasn't. They had a good selection and some interesting dishes. When my food came out I was very surprised! Excellent portions, hot, and delicous. The presentation with fresh fruit garnishes was great and totally unexpected. I highly recommend this place for breakfast and look forward to trying dinner there soon.

Party of 20

Satuarday nite, 5PM ,May 26,2007. Memorial Day Weekend. Time arranged 0ne month in advance. Show up at a quater to 5 and everything is ready. Sit down and the service is great. Food ordered was everything from the Turkey Dinner to Rack of Ribs, with all kinds of orders in between. Everyone at the table commented on how good the food was, I had the Broiled Scallops and can say they were great. All in all a very satisfying evening.

love this place

I love this place. The food is always great and the service is excellent. I love the steak tips and the fried calamari. The specials on the weekend are always excellent. Their chowder is hit or miss, but when it's good, it's really good.

My one question is what happened to that adorable girl with the curly hair and blue eyes? She's been working there forever (5+ years), and she seems to have just disappeared. I hope she comes back.

Very good breakfast

We tried The Lobster Tale for breakfast after the 7:30 AM Easter Mass at St. Ann's by the Sea. We hadn't planned on eating out and we were driving by the ocean... It seemed so bright and clear out...we weren't in a rush to get back home. Then we remembered The Lobster Tale was now serving breakfast on weekends. Well, the restaurant was bright and cheery; the waitresses were exceptional and the brekafast was very good...and very reasonable. At the moment, there aren't very many breakfast places around Marshfield. This was a pleasant surprise and we will be back. Good luck to them with this breakfast venture.

A Concerned Diner

This is my first time to the Forum. I was actually browsing the restaurant reviews and not planning to post, however, I recently ate at the Lobster Tale and the reviews for this restaurant seem more personal and "outrageous" than helpful. It has a great location and the food was wonderful. I had the baked stuffed haddock and the bisque . My husband had the biggest portion of chicken parm I'd ever seen. Yet I didn't receive a character reference from the staff & owners to judge them as "snobs" as submitted by one reviewer. I also find it hard to believe that a pipe burst over and "Flooded" one table and the restaurant wasn't closed. There is a big difference between a flood and a drip. I hope the posters and readers are savvy enough to know the difference between character assassination and a competent review.

Just went for St. Patricks day for the first time. My wife and I and the kids each had a fine meal with good service. The waitress was very nice as was the hostess. The best Guiness I've had in the states-perfect temperature with a nice frothy head. The apps and entrees were very good. My steak was prepared the way I asked it and everything was served nice and hot. A good experience, and on a busy night too! (it helped that the waitress was quite pretty as well!)

Good Resteraunt

Good all around food at a good price. Slightly upscale. Fresh lobster. Friendly attendants. 8.7 out of 10. Good choice for a romantic evening. I recommend the chowder

Ranges From Average to Awful

We've eaten there several time since moving to Marshfield in the Summer of 2005. We had one pretty good experience and all the others have been the pits. We kept going holding out hope that 'the next time' might be a decent dining experience again.

The food all in all is average to good in most cases, but the service is where they have consistenly serious problems.

In one particular instance, we had a party of seven (had friends in from out of town and thought we'd take them out to a 'local' seafood restaurant)- complete disaster-I'm pretty sure the server had no prior experience as a waitress and by all appearances, it was her first night on the job-a Saturday evening in July probably isn't the best time to be breaking in a new waitress!

In another instance, we were seated (party of three) and then after waiting 25 minutes for someone to take a drink order or anything, we finally got up and asked the hostess where our waitress was, they apparently went and got the waitress, neither the hostess nor the waitress made any apology for the 'mix up' the waitresses response to us was, "oh, no one told me this was my table tonight."

Have also had several thoroughly mediocre experiences at the Lobster Tale as well.

Clearly a management and staffing problem exists so if you go, keep your expectations low and perhaps you won't be too dissappointed.

A Marshfield Gem

Its too rare these days to find a restaurant where the staff is efficient and friendly, the prices are very reasonable, and the food is consistently excellent. The Lobster Tale is one. We have been going there 5-6 times a year for several years, and only once were we not totally happy. And even that time it was just that on an "all you can eat ribs" night, at 5:30pm they ran out of ribs. Last Saturday I had the pork loin with caramel sauce from the "specials" menu - delicious! I usually have the broiled haddock with newberg sauce - also delicious. With the wide open bar it can get a little noisy, especially later in the evening. We usually go fairly early while its still quiet and pleasant. If you're looking for a fancy place with a lot of ambiance, this isn't the place for you - go to Embers. But if you want just plain good food, well prepared, in a casual atmosphere, at prices that won't leave you broke, give the Lobster Tail a try.

REPEAT CUSTOMER X 10

EVERYWHERE YOU GO TO EAT YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND SOMEONE THAT HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE WHETER IT WAS A FLUKE ACCIDENT (A BURSTING PIPE, OR GETTING THE WRONG MEAL) WHATEVER IT HAPPENS EVERYWHERE. I JUDGE THEM SOLEY ON THE MULTITUDE OF TIMES I HAVE BROUGHT MY FAMILY IN OR HAVE PICKED UP TAKE-OUT. IT'S NOT MORTON'S, THEIR PRICES ARE GOOD AND YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. THEY WOULDN'T DO THE KIND OF BUSINESS THEY DO IF THEY WERE AS HORRIBLE AS SOME PEOPLE MAKE THEM OUT TO BE. GO THERE AND JUDGE FOR YOURSELF, CRITICIZE ONLY IF YOU YOURSELF, HAVE NEVER BEEN PART OF A SITUATION THAT WENT A RYE.

The service has always been excellent and the food fantastic!

Yuck

Its not great, never has been. I agree with the other poster that they are trying to make something they can't. I am shocked a different poster called the place "warm and cozy" because the owners work there. Maybe they work there because they can't get help. Service is bad time and time again

lovely

The food is fantastic. There is always something interesting on the special menu, especially on weekends. The owner is the head chef, so he's usually there. His wife waits tables, so it's nice and cosy.

The staff is pretty good. Request some of the more experienced staff. Our favorite waitresses are Amy, Heather, Shannon and Jackie is our newest favorite.

We love the steak tips and the baked stuffed jumbo shrimp dinner. The turkey dinner is pretty good too, but you'll fall asleep.

the bartenders are great and they'll make almost any drink you want.

Inconsistant, Can't deliver what they state on the menu

I've been here many times. Honestly it's hit or miss. I've had some good meals here, some real clunkers too goddammit! Many of the menu items sound like the way recent C.I.A. grads call their dishes when they are straight from Hyde Park, with little experience. When they listed a tuna sushi appetizer I gave it a shot. Well, it was not sushi, it was served sashimi style, with the wrong American long grain rice, no sweet rice vinegar, not bad tasting, just incorrectly prepared. The waitress asked if everyting was ok, so I told her why the dish was incorrect, she talked to the cook who told her that we must be cooking school grads (we aren't) to know the difference, and did not apologise for his mistakes. We live in town, so we're not there just during the summer and you never know if they can actually turn out the ambitious sounding dinners they list on the menues. Honestly they fumble the ball when they try to push too far. They don't have the talent or training to carry out what they are trying to do, on a consistant everyday basis. Somedays they are really good the next time it's awful. Great restaurants are consistantly good, these guys haven't learned that yet.

Ok food, Ok service

I am a regular customer here, but after my experience the other night, I am doubting if I should continue being a regular. To begin with, my friends and I ordered some drinks and it's a good thing we weren't thirsty because the waitress walked by numerous times seeing that we had empty glasses on the table and she never asked if we wanted more drinks. When the food FINALLY came out, the waitress dropped 2 of the entrees on the floor. As disappointing as that is, people do make mistakes. The disturbing part was that there was no apology and we werent even offered a free drink or dessert. The food was also sub par as well. I saw the waitress talking to the owner as well and still nothing was done and no apology. I hope this was a freak occurrence.

JUST Terrible!

My husband and mother in law went last saturday nite. She lives in ocean bluff and we have summer cottage, so we have been going here for many years.
We were seated on the porch and all of the sudden loads, like buckets of water burst from the pipe above our table. it drenched my husband and his prime rib.
There wasn't an empty table on the porch, so all of the people on the porch witnessed this downpour - all the guests looked over in amazement - it was terrible. After the downpour, the water continued to drip and drip. This occured after my husband sent his meat back twice - he ordered it well and it was rare. So he was just starting to eat (we had finished our meals).
My mother in law and i had the salmon and to be fair it was very good with the exception of the hair in the brocolli. Our server was nice and apologetic about the food. Getting back to ceiling - after the downpour, we moved our chairs so not to get wet - no employee let alone manager had come over. My mother inlaw got up and the 1st person she saw was the hostess, she told the hostess what happened and to send someone over. The hostess took no action. My husband is very upset, he gets up to find the manager. the hostess points to one of the waitress as being the manager but won't give the name of the manager. he comes back, we all get up, walk into the main dining rm, find our waitress, we tell her what happens, she says dont'worry about the bill, we give her $20 tip and go to the hostess stand. this hostess never gets manager for us, NEVER says SORRY. Rather, she says "you can leave now" " i am just the hostess"
TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE.......

Unbelievable Place, Hands Down. Don't listen to all the negativety, this place is awesome. May be a bit pricey, but definitely worth it. If you don't think they have they best clam chowder, then you're in need of a psychlogical evaluation!!! AWESOME!!

Ruined my Mothers Day

We got a great table, and the chowder and Bisque were out of this world. Our waitress never came back to see if we would have liked another drink, or clean the chowder bowls. 25 mintues later both our children were starving and we were still waiting. She finally came and said sorry for the lateness, my daughter said her sandwich was cold and my sons pasta looked fake. I touched both of them and they were cold-the waitress said, theirs might be cold but yours just came out so its hot! My husband and I both got fishermans platters, tried a few clams that were tasty. Next I cut a scallpo and took a bite, it was rotten, I moved some things around and tried to eat the fish but was really grossed out by the scallop, next my husband said he thinks his scallops are bad. So we hoped the waitress would come back but she didn't until 20 minutes later, I told her to give the plates to the cook and let him know there is something wrong wit the scallops. She then took a whole scallop tore it apart with her fingers and said it looks fine to me. Came back with the bill and charged us 47.00 for 2 fisherman platters, as well as the cold kids meals - my husband went to the person at the front desk and told them the story, our waitress then went up and said "everything was fine" we did get only 1 dinner taken off, we returned more than 3/4 of each dinner. It was very disappointing, but after reading everyone else comments-I guess we need to just go to the lobster tail in the summer. Oh and maybe when the waitresses just have had their tongues pierced, they should stay home a few days before they go out in public. I suppose it could have been worse, as we watched the would be diners coming into the resteraunt from across the street, they got soaked by the traffic passing by, we had a window seat and voted that this was the beat part of our dining experience at Lobster Tail.

FOOD GOOD, SERVICE A BIG FAT ZERO

2 in our group got the Lobster Bisque. They thought it was fantastic, 1 got the Clam Chowder and thought that was great. I had the scallops and they were a little too soft, but very, very sweet and good. Hubby had the Angus steak. He thought whatever they marinated it in, it overwhelmed the flavor of the steak. He was not a happy camper. The stuffed chicken breast got an 'A' from another guy.

As for service...that's another story. The service person didn't speak loud enough when we were ordering beer and we thought he stated "LaBlatt" when he was saying "Bass." We asked for separate checks....he put it on 1 bill. One in our party asked for a refill on his soda...on the 3rd try, he finally got it. Because the bill was not separate, we had trouble figuring out who owed what and that took more time than eating....he probably got a big tip because after we got back to our rooms, we figured it all out on paper. We overpaid! We are not happy campers and go to Haddad's the next time, which was some of the guys first choice.

Not worth the money

My family and I used to enjoy the food very much here. However,
the last few times we have gone, the food has been average at
best. The salads seem to be getting smaller and smaller while
the price stays the same. We also wonder where all of the friendly
service has gone? All of the waitresses we thought were great have disappeared.

No Thanks, in all aspects. The staff are horrible as are the 2 owners. They are both snobs and don't understand the meaning of respect.
The meals are ok but I don't see why I would go somewhere the bosses don't appreciate the employees.

Not too chabby

Well, I enjoyed it and had respect for the place until I heard 3 waitress and a guy bashing the staff at Bluewater...I personally like Bluewater but he mwnu is practically identical to the lobster tale. They were saying it loud and clear, it gives a nasty taste in my mouth to hear these people talking like this.
Overall-the meals are good but the personal is awful

Bland

Service was good but that's about it. The lazy mans lobster was bland along with the fried calimari. My wife got the Sea Bass special which turned out to be halibut (not sea bass) it was dry and a bit cold when sho got it. Won't be going again

hit or miss.

The Lobster Tale is noting to talk about, plain simple and you never know what quality of food you will end up with. I have had good meals there but the poor meals far surpass the good. I have never been impressed withthe servers, I feel like they act as thought I am putting them out and they all seem to have attitudes. I like the Clambake they offer, thats always good.

fried clams

I took my family in last night, very poor at best. My chicken fingers were stone cold in the middle, wrong sauce on them. My daughter got the mac and cheese..boy right out of the kraft mac and cheese box. My other daughter got chicken fingers and they were way over cooked...yuk The wife got some kind of chicken special that was pretty good and I got fried clam that su****. At4am in the morning it came out both ways, boy I hope I don't get some kind of bad food illness. I know they were the clams. I will never ever go in that place again...And to boot the clams cost 23.00' I'll go to the other side of town and get a good meal at a more creative place than this crap....

Wonderful!

I go to the Lobster Tale at least three times a year with my family and have never been disappointed. The food is unbelievable and the staff is both friendly and attentive. The Filet Tips (my favorite) are always filled with flavor and cooked just right. My husband enjoys the variety of seafood options and has never once complained (Amazing because he's not the type to bite his tongue if the smallest thing goes wrong!) Even our guests that we bring with us rave about how tasty their meals are. The 45 minute drive to Marshfield is worth it to enjoy great food and friendly people.

AMAZING!!!

The Tale is the best restaurant I've been to in a long time. I went there with some friends from work, all our food was amazing. We got an appatizer sampler plate, everything was delicious (even the fried calamari and i hate calamari). I hate the steak tips with mashed potatoes. My tips were cooked so perfectly and the mashed potatoes are just like home. I would recommend The Lobster Tale to anyone (even though I work at a different restaurant). Now that's good food!!! If you're in the mood for great food at a great price The Tale is the place to be. Matt is doing a great job!!! Keep it up!!

EXCELLENT

Our family goes to the "Tale" probably once a week and we love it. the food is always delicious and the staff is very friendly! It is a great version of the old Fairview Inn, before it burnt down. The people are down to earth and fun, not pretencious or snooty. only downfall- no outside seating, only an enclosed air conditioned porch. definately check it out if you have the chance.

are you kidding me

the prices here are horrid, 15 dollars plus a pound for lobster.....you can go across the street to the local market and get them for 4 a pound! this place has the right start but having alot of young kids cooking for pennies on the dollar and a bunch of gossipy waitresses who would rather chat then help you kinda sucks!

Inconsistent

The Lobster Tale wins the award for inconsitency. We used to eat at the LT often but had too many experiences with really lousy service about two years ago. We've recently given it another try and have enjoyed good service about 6 of the past 8 visits (over the past 3-4 months). We don't venture out that way in the summer as all the restaurants seem to enjoy good business from July through September and we don't like crowds. We hope the food and service continues to be good but this place really needs to pay attention to things and make sure the customers get a positive experience--every time they visit.

NOT TO GOOD

Very over priced and Lobster roll is packed w/ more mayo than lobster.
way to much flour in the clam chowder (no where near as good as Legal's
as they advertise) all we could taste was flour in the chowder not much
of a base either. too expensive.

is this place for visitors only?

the tale is pretty nice and has a great staff but the owners/management dont seem too freindly towards the locals, this is after all a beach town and you only have tourists so many days out of the year, learn to treat locals better and your establishment will be better

... not impressed

What can I say about Lobster Tale? It reminds me of the old Barnside on Route 53. Not a bad place, but not distinctive food that you would ever remember either. There's still room to improve boys. My personal rating? 3 out of 5 stars. -Bc

excellent food loved to dine here. only thing missing is the lovely waitress named Tracy. Where is she? A good waitstaff is hard to come by. Can't imagine why they would let her go. Always attentive and prompt. She really did a wonderful job! I don't dine here as much, because the service is so inexperienced! Have asked about her no one seems to have any answers as to where she may have gone.Would like to see her back on board! A very concerned customer!

lobstertale just OK

Lunch two times has been just ok. Dinner once, was enough food was undercooked, staff stressed out not enough help. At lunchtime the waitstaff seemed young and not experienced and the food nothing special. Don't waste your money on dinner here unless you get a boiled lobster -How can you mess that up?

good bartenders

This place has the greatest bartenders. Dolly Sheehan, and Cathy Madigan are awesome. Steve was great too. R.I.P.

Enjoy

The best place to enjoy the atmosphere of Brant Rock. The seafood is always fresh and you are welcomed here. It's lively and fun, not stuffy and pretentious.

the Lobster Tale

Used to love going there, but the service got bad and Tracy is not there anymore. The food was good though.

The Lobster Tale

We used to go to the Lobster Tale at least twice a week. We stopped, primarily because they don't play favorites with their regular customers. We had to wait just as long as everyone else. We were there through the winters, when there were more wait staff than patrons. But it didn't matter, we were just another set of patrons. Another problem was the service. Unbelievably slow.

It's too bad, because the food was good there.

Smokey

Nice restaurant. Good food. Good seafood. Only problem is that even if you request non smoking, smoke permeates the air from the bar area. Noisey place also. I love good food which this restaurant has, but my disdain for cigarette smoke outweighs my desire for good food, so I avoid this place. Go to non smoking restaurant such as the Fieldston.

Try it

Have dined here often. Food is generally good but find mashed potatoes are often too cold. Service is friendly but can be slow depending on what night of the week you go. Chower is ok, and fish is fresh. Find the prices a little high for the ambiance.

Lobster Tale Restaurant - It's a good thing!

The Lobster Tale Restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere. Their seafood is excellent. I highly recommend their fried oysters or steamers. Their cauliflower and cheese sauce as a side is wonderful, but generally only available on the weekend. The service is friendly and prompt. Always have had a pleasant time at the Lobster Tale. Check out the local paintings on the wall in the waiting area. There are some really fine examples of local scenes.

Too expensive, food less than okay

We've only been here once, but found the Lobster Tale not worth the wait and money. The clams were overcooked and sandy. The tables are way too close together. It seems like you're in a casual restaurant where you expect prices to reflect that, but the prices are unreasonably high for the quality and environment you'd expect.

Excellent

Food is wonderful. The only thing I'd change is that it gets pretty noisy in there. Acoustics? Try the Chicken Olivia!!
